A successful shoot doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built on preparation, flexibility and knowing when to trust your instincts. After years of photo and video shoots across all kinds of brands, locations and timelines, we’ve learned that the details matter just as much as the big ideas. These are the shoot day tips we swear by to stay prepared, think creatively and capture content that actually works.

1. Research the client or subject ahead of time to understand their personality and perspective.

Going into a shoot or interview without context makes it harder to capture authentic, meaningful content.

2. Scout the location whenever possible.

Take note of lighting conditions, power sources, potential interview spots, foot traffic at different times and how the light changes throughout the day.

3. Don’t let your shot list box you in.

Capture the essentials, then trust your instincts if you spot something that could work better than the original plan.

4. Overprepare for every shoot.

Bring extra batteries, memory cards and weather protection when possible. Conditions can change quickly and it’s always better to have backups than to be caught without them.

5. Pay close attention to backgrounds.

Check for anything distracting or out of place before you start shooting. It’s much easier to adjust on set than to fix issues in post-production.

6. Vary your camera angles.

Different perspectives can shift tone and emotion, so avoid shooting everything at eye level.

7. Consider using prime lenses when it makes sense.

While not ideal for every shoot, fixed focal lengths encourage creative thinking and more intentional composition.

8. Use natural light to your advantage.

Look for windows or existing light sources on location and incorporate them into b-roll and interviews whenever possible.

Strong photo and video content is rarely about one perfect shot. It’s the result of thoughtful decisions, attention to detail and being ready to adapt in the moment.
